helmsman’s Post

Just like in the case of a plane a submarine moves in three dimensions. When the helm gets turned sideways the rudder reacts and the ship moves horizontally. When the helm gets pushed or pulled, the diving rudders tilt and the ship moves vertically.

As the helmsman has no view outside the vessel, he must rely on the information provided by the periscopes, the sonars and the officers to get a grasp of the environment which they are sailing in and the surrounding obstacles.
